Former Ondo Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, was a guest at the 1st Emeritus Professor Oladipo O. Akinkugbe distinguished lecture, organised by the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo city (UNIMED) on Thursday.
Established by Governor Mimiko in 2014, UNIMED is Nigeria’s first specialized university for medical training and research.
According to a former minister of health and the guest lecturer, Prof. Isaac Adewole, “I have told the SSG and I will beg Governor Akeredolu not to allow the award-winning Abiyẹ (safe motherhood) programme to die”. The former minister said every serious country should adopt the Abiyẹ template as it is a potent way of reducing maternal mortality.
He said “We will not be celebrating Dr Mimiko today, if he had spent all the money on building roads and bridges. Rather, he chose to invest in human capital development”
Emeritus Professor Akinkugbe was UNIMED’s pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council.
